11th RDA plenary meeting: Collocated event

The 11th RDA Plenary Meeting will take place from the 21st to the 23rd March 2018 in Berlin, Germany. Under the theme "From Data to Knowledge", the Plenary meeting welcomes the participation of all data scientists, experts and practitioners engaged in the advancement of data-driven science and economy. The Research Data Alliance and the 2.5-day Plenary meeting provide the ideal, neutral and trustworthy forum to discuss the opportunities and challenges of a global data ecosystem of best practices, standards and interoperable data infrastructures fostering cross-disciplinary knowledge and innovation.

EOSC is a high-level European Commission initiative intended to set off the ground by federating existing scientific data infrastructures that are now spread across disciplines and EU member states to support open science. EOSC will make access to scientific data easier and more efficient. According to the vision, EOSC will be underpinned by “minimal and rigorous global standards for open research data, as well as standards for EOSC based services for collaboration through the EOSC (e.g. to facilitate inter-disciplinarity and avoid fragmentation). These standards (technical, semantic, legal and organisational) must combine long-term sustainability with optimal freedom of local implementation.”

In this context three EC projects will collaborate to realize the EOSC vision:

  • EOSC-hub brings together an extensive group of national and international service providers to create a central contact point for European researchers and innovators to discover, access, use and reuse a broad spectrum of resources for advanced data-driven research.
  • OpenAIRE-Advance continues the mission of OpenAIRE to support the Open Access/Open Data mandates in Europe.
  • FREYA is focussed on building the sustainable infrastructure for persistent identifiers as a core component of open science, in the EU and globally.

Meeting Objectives

Following the related BoF “EOSC-related European Projects getting Global: Engaging with the RDA”, the goal of the meeting is to present and examine the vision, objectives and complementarities of the three Horizon 2020 projects (EOSC-hub, OpenAIRE-Advance and FREYA), that will contribute to the implementation of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). The liaison with existing RDA groups will be presented, and potential new RDA topics will be discussed to support the projects’ vision. The meeting will offer the opportunity to to liaise with interested RDA members from all regions.
